Michel held phone conversations with Armenian, Azerbaijani and Russian heads of states regarding Nagorno-Karabakh

Conversation with Nikol Pashinyan

According to press service of the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan had a telephone conversation with the President of the European Council Charles Michel.

The parties discussed a number of issues related to the implementation of the agreements reached during the meeting of the Prime Minister of Armenia, the President of the European Council, and the President of Azerbaijan in Brussels on April 6, alongside the situation in the region and the agenda on Armenia-EU relations.

Charles Michel reiterated the EU's commitment to promoting dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Conversation with Ilham Aliyev 

President of the European Council Charles Michel called President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, press service of the Azerbaijani President reported.

During the phone conversation, the parties discussed the trilateral meeting in Brussels on April 6th, which was organised at the initiative and with the participation of European Council President Charles Michel and emphasised the importance of concrete and results-oriented work in accordance with the agreements reached.

President Ilham Aliyev thanked European Council President Charles Michel for his continued support and attention to the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including border demarcation and delimitation, the preparation of a peace agreement between the two countries, and the opening of transportation and communication lines.

The President of Azerbaijan stated that the Azerbaijani side had determined the composition of the national commission for the delimitation and demarcation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, as well as a delegation to draft the peace agreement between the two countries, based on the outcomes of the Brussels meeting, and that Azerbaijan was ready for negotiations with Armenia in the "Baku-Yerevan" format. President Ilham Aliyev emphasised the necessity of considering Azerbaijan's five principles when negotiating a peace accord.

President Charles Michel stated that he will continue to work to improve relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan and contribute to the region's long-term peace.

During the conversation, the European Union expressed its desire to assist Azerbaijan in its mine-clearance operations and in determining the fate of around 4,000 Azerbaijanis who have been missing since the first Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.

The two sides also discussed the potential for Azerbaijan and the European Union cooperating, as well as other matters of mutual concern.

Conversation with Vladimir Putin 

Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephone conversation with the President of the European Council Charles Michel, discussed issues of ensuring stability and security in Nagorno-Karabakh considering recent contacts with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

As the press service of the Kremlin reported, during a long telephone conversation between the head of state and the head of the European Council, the topic of ensuring stability and security in Nagorno-Karabakh was discussed, including considering the recent meetings held by Vladimir Putin and Charles Michel with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“The fundamental importance of the consistent implementation of the fundamental trilateral agreements of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia dated November 9, 2020, January 11, and November 26, 2021, was reaffirmed. In this context, the President of Russia announced the steps taken to implement projects to restore economic and transport links, as well as to launch the process of delimitation of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and negotiations to develop a peace treaty between the two countries,” the Kremlin said.
