U.S. Ambassador on Violence Against the Media in Georgia

| News, Georgia

After discussing press freedoms with media watchdogs, the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics and the Media Advocacy Coalition, US Ambassador Kelly Degnan condemned violence and intimidation against the media in Georgia. According to Degnan's July 12 statement, the debate centred on the serious worsening of the media environment and the disturbing increase in harassment, persecution, and physical attacks against members of the press.

She emphasised that in democracies, independent media from all political perspectives must be safeguarded so that they are free to inform the populace and report on significant community events and developments. "Responsible, ethical media is necessary to hold people in positions of influence accountable for their actions," the ambassador stated. In light of this, the Ambassador voiced her support for the Charter's efforts to aid journalists in producing fair, balanced, and ethical reporting.

Degnan also emphasised the importance of punishing individuals who attack journalists. She added that in order to protect the safety and security of journalists, the government must recognise its responsibility and take proactive measures.
