Aliyev Orders New Humanitarian Aid Package for Ukraine
On February 5, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed an order allocating one million manats to the Ministry of Energy to purchase and ship Azerbaijani-manufactured electrical equipment as humanitarian aid to Ukraine.
The document noted that Azerbaijan has provided humanitarian assistance to Ukraine on multiple occasions in response to the ongoing situation. It also highlighted the foundation of bilateral relations based on key agreements, including the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership (March 16, 2000), the Declaration on Friendship and Strategic Partnership (May 22, 2008), and the Joint Declaration of the President of Azerbaijan and the President of Ukraine (January 14, 2022).
On February 6, Azerbaijan and Ukraine marked the 33rd anniversary of diplomatic relations. Ukrainian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Yuriy Husyev emphasized in an article dedicated to the occasion that ties between the two countries are built on friendship, mutual support, and strategic partnership. He recalled that diplomatic relations date back to 1918, when official ties were established between Ukraine and the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, laying the groundwork for modern cooperation.
Husyev highlighted the consistent support between the two nations for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as their commitment to international law. He also noted Azerbaijan’s role as a key partner for Ukraine in trade and energy, mentioning the gradual recovery of trade turnover after a decline in 2022 and the potential for expanded regional cooperation through transport corridor projects.
Additionally, the ambassador underscored the significance of humanitarian assistance, expressing gratitude for Azerbaijan’s continued support, including energy equipment aid, demining efforts, and other humanitarian contributions since the start of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian media and Telegram channels perceived Baku's provision of humanitarian aid to Ukraine against the background of the crisis in relations between Baku and Moscow as another ‘hostile’ signal from Azerbaijan towards Russia.
