Antony Blinken on Washington Meetings between Armenia and Azerbaijan: "We Are Close to Final Agreement"

On May 4, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke to the press about the results of the four-day peace talks between Jeyhun Bayramov and Ararat Mirzoyan, the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia, at the George Schultz National Foreign Relations Training Center in Washington.

The Secretary of State began his speech by thanking both foreign ministers for their commitment to the dialogue between the countries. Blinken emphasized that during the days of talks, the two sides discussed very complex issues and achieved significant progress towards a lasting peace agreement: "I hope that the ministers, like me, believe that the agreement is within reach. In addition to being historic, this agreement will be in the interests of both the people of Azerbaijan and Armenia, and its positive impact will be felt even outside of both countries."

Blinken emphasized that the United States will continue to support both countries in achieving peace: "The last part of the marathon is the most difficult part of it, and the United States will continue to help the parties reach the finish line."

At the end of his speech, the Secretary of State concluded by emphasizing that this process was not easy. However, thanks to the commitment and determination of the parties, there was significant progress in the negotiations. "Both Azerbaijan and Armenia recognize that the only way to sustainable peace is through dialogue," Blinken assured the United States of assisting the parties in these efforts. According to him, the arrival of the diplomatic delegations of Azerbaijan and Armenia to the United States and spending time here is an indication that the parties are eager to achieve peace. "The parties have discussed very difficult issues over the past few days and have made concrete progress towards a lasting peace agreement," Blinken said.

On the same day, US President's National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan wrote about this on his Twitter account, "We welcome the progress achieved by Armenia and Azerbaijan in the negotiations and encourage the continuation of the dialogue. A sustainable and fair agreement will be the basis for opening up opportunities for both countries and the region."

On May 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan stated that Azerbaijan and Armenia reached a mutual agreement on some articles of the draft peace agreement. The information emphasized that on May 1-4 in Arlington, Virginia, the United States of America, talks were held between Bayramov and Mirzoyan.

It is noted in the information that the ministers and the members of the delegation accompanying them reached a mutual agreement on some articles of the draft bilateral Agreement on Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations, and at the same time, they accepted that the positions on some key issues remained different: "The parties agreed to continue the discussions they came."

According to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, issues related to regional security and stability and the process of normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan were discussed.

Ararat Mirzoyan noted that the ongoing aggressive policy of Azerbaijan against Nagorno-Karabakh and the occupation of Armenia's sovereign territories do not contribute to the efforts to establish stability in the region. "Minister Mirzoyan emphasized that Azerbaijan's actions against Nagorno-Karabakh, with the words of hatred heard at the highest level and the use of open force threats, indicate Azerbaijan's intention to carry out ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh and real danger," the report added.
