During a government meeting on April 20, the Armenian Ministry of Defense proposed amendments and additions to the laws "On Defense" and "On Military Service and the Status of a Serviceman," as a result of which women citizens of the republic will be granted the right to voluntary military service. Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikyan, who presented the project, said that a period of military service of six months would be established for women.

"Citizens who have applied for compulsory military service are not subject to the grounds for deferment and early dismissal from compulsory military service for family reasons, according to the logic that during the six months of service, it makes no sense to carry out early dismissal since family circumstances are checked before conscription," the minister explained. "Instead, women will have the right to refuse service before the day of the call," he added.

"Their service will take place exclusively in training military units. Six months later, during demobilization, the women will receive an honorary payment of 1 million drams [about $2,600]. In case of early release from service for health reasons, the same amount will be divided into six months. The honorary payment will be calculated according to the number of months of real service," the official emphasized.
