Armenian Deputy Speaker Questions Opposition's Actions Amid Protests

On June 11, Ruben Rubinyan, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) of Armenia, said that he did not understand the logic of the opposition's actions.

During his speech in the parliament, the vice-speaker considered strange the appearance of the MPs from the opposition factions in the session hall of the National Assembly, as the leaders of the protest movement "Tavush in the Name of Motherland" had declared the previous day about the necessity to obstruct the work of the MPs from the CC and not allowing them to pass into the parliament building.

"What is your tactic now: cancel the sessions of the National Assembly or not cancel them? Is it possible to know: Did you come to the National Assembly today? If you had not registered at the sitting, you would not have received your salary for this session," Rubinyan asked his opposition colleagues.

The NA Vice-Speaker also said that at the sitting of the NA Council, at which last Monday the opposition proposed to hold an extraordinary session on June 11, he asked the political opponents why the draft message of the National Assembly on the necessity of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's resignation was presented instead of the draft on the vote of no confidence in the government. According to him, the opposition MPs said it was a completely different process.

Rubinyan also asked why, in the draft message presented, the opposition does not mention the necessity of nominating the leader of the mentioned protest movement, Primate of the Tavush Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan (Bagrat Srbazan), as a candidate for the post of Prime Minister. He said the parliamentary opposition reiterated that it was 'a different process,' which Rubinyan found 'very strange.'
