Arrest of Azerbaijani Opposition Leader Sparks Domestic and International Concerns

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On July 24, the United States reported that it closely followed the arrest of Gubad Ibadoglu, the chairman of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare Party (ADWP) in Azerbaijan.

"We are closely following the arrest of Gubad Ibadoglu. The United States remains firmly committed to increasing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms," State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller said in a daily press briefing. "We call on Azerbaijan to protect the human rights and fundamental freedoms of its citizens, including Gubad Ibadoglu, by Azerbaijan's constitution and international obligations," Miller added.

On July 25, a public protection committee for the rights of Gubad Ibadoglu was established. Jamil Hasanli, the chairman of the oppositional National Council, was elected as the committee chairman. The public defense committee includes 21 public and political figures and human rights defenders.

On July 26, the investigative body searched the residence of Ibadoglu on Matbuat Avenue, Baku, and the garden house in the Novkhani settlement. The search lasted 1 hour and 5 minutes in the residence and 30 minutes in the garden house. "Processor block of two computers belonging to his children and the book "Prophet of Islam" by Mohammed Hamidullah, the official publication of the Caucasian Muslims Department, were taken from Gubad's residence on Matbuat Avenue. It was reported that no material and items important for the investigation were found in the garden house," Gubad Ibadoghlu's brother Galib Bayramov said.

Moreover, Vugar Bayramov, the MP and Gubad Ibadohlu's brother, said: "We believe that investigations will be carried out objectively and a fair decision will be made by the principles of the rule of law. I will do what is possible in this matter. May God open the doors of all the prisoners."

Furthermore, "Human Rights Watch" called for the cancellation of dubious charges against the imprisoned chairman of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare (ADR) Party. "Such false accusations serve only one purpose - to silence opposition and critical voices in the country," said Giorgi Gogia, the organization's Deputy Director for Europe and Central Asia.

Notably, on July 24, Baku's Narimanov District Court sentenced Gubad Ibadoglu to 3 months and 26 days in prison.
