Azerbaijan and Turkey conduct military exercises in the Lachin region
Azerbaijan’s and Turkey’s military started joint exercises on 6 September in the Lachin region, through which the corridor between Yerevan and Stepanakert (Khankendi) passes.
From June 28 to June 30, the "Mustafa Kemal Ataturk-2021" exercises were held in Baku with the participation of 600 Turkish and Azerbaijani soldiers. The exercises involved the crews of tanks, helicopters, artillery crews and drones. More frequent joint exercises of the military of the two countries contribute to the transition of the Azerbaijani army to NATO standards.
During the escalation of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh in the fall of 2020, the Turkish authorities have repeatedly expressed support for Azerbaijan. On December 10, 2020, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Baku for the victory parade. The Turkish military also took part in the parade. Unmanned aerial vehicles, which played an important role during the fighting, and captured equipment of the armies of Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia were demonstrated.
The Lachin corridor with a width of five kilometres, connecting Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia, passes through the Lachin region. The city of Lachin remains under the control of Russian peacekeepers, while the territory of the Lachin region came under the control of Azerbaijan from December 1, 2020.
