Azerbaijan grants Turkish citizens visa-free stay

| News, Azerbaijan

On 25 July, Azerdaily reported that as of 1 September 2019 the visa requirements for Turkish citizens with valid passports who want to visit the Republic of Azerbaijan for up to 30 days are lifted.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu wrote on Twitter that the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev informed his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the upcoming changes. He added that the measures were in line with the traditional understanding that Turkey and Azerbaijan are “one nation, two states,” as stated by the former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev.

He also posted a letter from Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry addressed to Turkey. The letter stated that the action was taken as the two countries' “cultural roots, friendship, brotherhood, and solidarity are at the highest level and developing in all fields.” Turkish tourists are among the most numerous visitors to Azerbaijan, with 291 500 visitors recorded in 2018. Only Russian, Georgian and Iranian citizens visited Azerbaijan in higher numbers then the Turkish ones. Besides Turkey, only Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan have a visa-free travel regime with Azerbaijan.

On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin also signed a decree that expanded the visa exemption for Turkish citizens, allowing those with service (gray) and special (green) passports to enter the country without a visa.
