Azerbaijan, Iran Continue High-Level Talks on Bilateral Ties
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met on August 31 during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek to discuss bilateral relations and prospects for broader cooperation.
Pezeshkian expressed appreciation for Azerbaijan’s support for Iran during a difficult period, including the assistance provided by Baku and Aliyev’s public support. He said Tehran sees strong opportunities to expand cooperation with Azerbaijan across a range of areas and highlighted the friendly and brotherly nature of the relationship.
Pezeshkian also stressed Iran’s interest in maintaining good relations with all neighboring countries. Aliyev, in turn, described Azerbaijan’s assistance to Iran as an expression of the close ties between the two countries.
Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan supports a peaceful and negotiated resolution to the situation involving Iran. The two presidents exchanged views on prospects for developing cooperation in various fields.
The foreign ministers continued the discussion on September 1, when Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Bishkek. Iran and Azerbaijani counterparts addressed the current state of bilateral relations, prospects for expanding cooperation and regional developments, while calling for regular high-level dialogue and the advancement of mutually beneficial projects.
The meetings further underscored an effort by Baku and Tehran to maintain political dialogue and expand practical cooperation while coordinating their positions on regional issues.
