Azerbaijan Moves Embassy to New Location in Iran for Enhanced Security
On May 17, Aykhan Hajizada, the Spokesperson of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry addressed a local media inquiry about the efforts to restore the activities of the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Islamic Republic of Iran. He stated that following the terrorist attack on the Embassy in January of the previous year, negotiations with the Iranian side have focused on securing full safety assurances for the Embassy.
"During the last few months, our country's expectations were conveyed to the opposite side within the framework of contacts and negotiations between officials and relevant institutions of the two countries," Hajizada explained. "Proper work was carried out with the Iranian side to relocate our Embassy to a new venue that is safer and meets all the requirements necessary for the Embassy."
Hajizada announced that a new location for the Embassy had been determined and that measures are currently being taken to ensure the venue and building meet the necessary conditions. "After the mentioned works are completed, it is planned to restore the activity of the Embassy in the new venue," he noted.
Notably, on January 27, 2023, there was an armed attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran, resulting in the death of the head of the security service and injuries to two other guards. Tehran police reported that the suspect was arrested and that Iranian officials condemned the incident, claiming the gunman had a personal rather than political motive. Following the attack, Azerbaijan ceased all diplomatic activities at its embassy in Tehran and withdrew its diplomats from the country. President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan labeled the armed attack as a terrorist act. Subsequently, on April 6, 2023, Azerbaijan expelled four diplomats from the Iranian embassy. In response, on May 5, Iran expelled four employees of the Azerbaijani Consulate General in Tabriz.
