Azerbaijani Parliament Criticizes US Senate Decision on Aid Restrictions

| News, Politics, Azerbaijan

On November 15, the US Senate approved the S3000 law, which provides for the waiver of powers related to assistance to Azerbaijan. According to the 907th amendment to the Freedom Support Act, the US government is prohibited from assisting with the official structures of Azerbaijan. The 907th Amendment has been suspended every year by the President of the United States since 2002.

On November 21, the Azerbaijani Parliament condemned the S3000 law of the US Senate in a special statement.

The Parliament called on the US to take an objective position regarding the processes in the South Caucasus. "The Parliament of Azerbaijan rejects the decision of the US Senate dated November 15. Washington's actions like this are affecting peace and stability in the region. The support of the US to the aggressor Armenia helped to occupy the lands of Azerbaijan. For 30 years, the USA did not accept any sanctions against the occupying Armenia, on the contrary, it allocated financial aid and organized high-level meetings," it added. "Such steps of the American side have damaged the reputation of the United States in the Azerbaijani society. Unfortunately, the United States repeated the mistake it made against Azerbaijan in 1992 with the 907th amendment," the statement emphasized.

The document states that the US also supported the [self-dissolved] separatist Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh. "Today's actions of the United States as a mediator have resulted in the loss of trust in the Azerbaijani society, and the American foreign policy has completely collapsed in recent years. This is proven by the policy of the United States in the Middle East and Afghanistan," the Parliament added. "Milli Majlis [the Parliament] declares once again that Azerbaijan will always react decisively to all negative steps based on the norms and principles of international law," the statement reads.
