Azerbaijani Serviceman Detained in Armenia After Border Crossing and Shooting

An Azerbaijani serviceman was in Armenia on October 1 after allegedly crossing the border and shooting an Armenian citizen in the leg in the village of Shaki, Syunik Province.

Armenia’s National Security Service reported that Azerbaijan’s State Security Service had informed its Armenian counterpart on September 29 that a serviceman had left his unit under unknown circumstances and could have crossed into Armenia illegally. Armenian and Azerbaijani authorities subsequently launched search operations.

At 14:15 on October 1, Armenia’s emergency services received a report that a citizen had been shot in the leg in Shaki. Police units were dispatched to the area, where the Azerbaijani serviceman was identified and detained.

The injured person was taken to hospital and was reported to be in stable condition, with no danger to their life.

The Armenian Investigative Committee has opened criminal proceedings over the incident, while the details of the case have been communicated to the Azerbaijani authorities.
