Court Arrests Brother of Armenia’s Catholicos
On November 3, Ara Zohrabyan, the lawyer of the Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II’s family, announced that the Yerevan court had arrested the cleric’s brother on charges of "obstructing election campaigning". During the statement, Zohrabyan explained that Garegin II’s brother and nephew simply declined to attend a party’s election meeting, emphasizing that no conflict had occurred and that CCTV footage confirmed this. "Judge Arman Babakhanyan has ordered the one-month arrest of Gevorg Nersisyan. A hearing on the motion to arrest Hambardzum Nersisyan (the Catholicos's nephew) will begin a little later," Zohrabyan noted.
Earlier, Harutyun Mkrtchyan, a candidate representing the anti-Russian Republic party in the Vagharshapat municipal elections, filed a complaint against the relatives of the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church. Mkrtchyan alleged that on November 1, Gevorg Nersisyan and his sons had obstructed the party’s election campaign.
