Czech Republic to extradite Narek Sargsyan to Armenia

| News, Armenia

On 4 June the spokesperson of the Prague City Court Marketa Putzi has declared that the Court has rendered a decision on extradition of Narek Sargsyan, nephew of the former President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, to Armenia, reported news.am.

Under Czech law, the final decision on extradition shall be made by the Minister of Justice of the Czech Republic. According to Putzi, it is unlikely that the minister will express an opinion that differs from the Court’s opinion.

On that occasion the Armenian Justice Minister, Artak Zeynalyan, addressed the reporters. According to him, the extradition would be carried out within the framework of the international treaty. “I believe it would hardly be possible to carry it out before all the procedures took place. I do not know whether the court decision will be appealed or will not be appealed, because the accused person has judicial rights, too,” Zeynalyan said. According to the Office of the Prosecutor General of Armenia, the official information about the Prague Municipal Court decision on Sargsyan’s extradition has not been received yet.

Narek Sargsyan was apprehended in Prague last year in December. When his documents were being checked, he had presented a fake Guatemalan passport under the name of Franklin Gonzalez. On 28 December 2018, the petition for his extradition to Armenia was sent to Prague. He is charged in Armenia with illegal arms possession and illegal drug trafficking.
