Armenia and the European Union are advancing work on visa liberalization, with both sides maintaining 2029 as the Armenian government’s target for visa-free travel, EU Ambassador to Armenia Vassilis Maragos stated on September 18.

Speaking in Vanadzor, Maragos that implementation of the visa liberalization action plan remains dependent on progress by Armenian authorities. The EU official explained that the process will involve an initial legislative phase followed by practical implementation and assessment. Maragos also underscored that Armenia is currently the only country with which the European Union has a visa liberalization dialogue.

The EU Ambassador addressed the broader relationship between Brussels and Yerevan, describing closer engagement in trade, connectivity and regional development. Maragos pointed out that the European Parliament had approved a proposal to grant duty-free access to several hundred categories of Armenian goods, with the measure expected to become effective soon.

According to Maragos, the trade preferences are intended to help Armenian exporters reach additional markets, particularly in light of restrictions affecting exports to Russia. He highlighted EU-backed support for businesses and local development, including projects in Lori Province. Maragos also referred to projects in Armenia’s north-south corridor, including work around Sisian and Kajaran and EU engagement in Meghri and the Syunik region.

Maragos further maintained that Armenian society is increasingly oriented toward peace and normalization, including greater contacts between Armenian and Turkish business communities. EU Ambassador to Armenia stressed that political differences remain part of democratic life but argued that continued dialogue and normalization could support wider regional cooperation.
