Georgia Discusses Possible Influx of Karabakh Armenians

On September 26, the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Georgia issued a statement in response to information spread in the Georgian media about possible plans to resettle outside the Republic of Armenia Armenians who were transferred to Armenia as a result of the recent military operation in Karabakh.
The Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Georgia added: "The Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Georgia rejects such fabricated fake news and condemns their dissemination and cheap speculation on this issue, especially at this difficult time for the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia".
On September 25, Inal Ardzinba, the head of the Foreign Ministry of occupied Abkhazia, spoke about the issue of receiving Armenian refugees who had left Nagorno-Karabakh and the impact of these developments on the rest of the Caucasus. "The status of Nagorno-Karabakh has been abolished as a result of capitulation. The situation is developing rapidly," he said. Noting that the international system is in a state of fracture, Ardzinba stressed the importance of responding to these new developments. "Of course, it may not have a direct effect, but at least it contributes to the increase of tensions in the Transcaucasus region. We don't want that to happen here," he said.
Commenting on the expected influx of refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh to Abkhazia, Ardzinba said: "We have special components in our visa policy for Armenian residents. The potential exists, given our historical ties and the large Armenian diaspora in Abkhazia, even though we expect that some refugees will mostly travel to the Republic of Armenia itself. But after careful consideration, we feel that this will not be a widespread event; there is no doubt in our minds. We'll do our best to compensate for this circumstance in some way. The actions of the Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan basically recognized the state sovereignty of Azerbaijan over this territory, which contradicts certain legal acts of Armenia itself and the corresponding decree. As a result, the issue is undeniably complicated".
