Georgia's State Security Service (SSSG) has launched a sabotage investigation into what it describes as a coordinated disinformation campaign targeting Russian tourists and aimed at damaging the country's economic interests.

According to the SSSG, fake accounts on the social media platform X circulated false claims alleging that Georgian citizens abandoned Russian tourists in forests and deliberately contaminated food served to Russian visitors in restaurants. The agency said the accounts were operated from abroad and sought to create the impression that Georgia is an unsafe place for Russian tourists.

Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze defended the investigation, calling it an important step and stating that authorities would pursue the case to completion. He warned that those engaged in sabotage against Georgia or acting against the country's national interests would be brought to justice, adding that the state is "stronger than ever."

Authorities argue that the alleged campaign sought to undermine confidence in Georgia as a tourist destination and inflict economic damage by discouraging Russian visitors through false online narratives circulated on social media.
