Georgia Reacts to Aliyev’s South Caucasus Platform Initiative

| News, Georgia

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev spoke about the importance of regional cooperation in the South Caucasus. He made the statement during a speech in the format of a round table in Prague, where they discussed the topic of "Peace and Security on the European Continent" within the framework of the EU Political Community Summit.

According to Aliyev's press service, he "emphasized the importance of creating a single platform for the discussion of Azerbaijan-Georgia-Armenia, that is, in a triple format, to ensure peace and stability in the South Caucasus." He also added that energy, communication issues, and other problems of common interest could be discussed there.

Aliyev also noted that Azerbaijan supports the process of normalization of relations between Turkey and Armenia. He emphasized that the process of normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia and between Turkey and Armenia are mutually complementary processes, "a fact that may serve to ensure peace and tranquility in the entire region."

According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia, Ilia Darchiashvili, Georgia is always ready for "Tbilisi to be a place where our southern neighbors can have a calm and peaceful dialogue in order to get concrete results from these negotiations and to establish peace and stability in our region."

"We do not have any preconditions in this process. Our only offer to our neighbors is valid today and always, at any time, in the time and space they want. In our country, we are ready to host our neighbors and help them if there is a need for it, strengthen the dialogue and deepen this process to achieve peace in the region", Ilia Darchiashvili said.

Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Gharibashvili has repeatedly stated that Georgia is ready to play the role of mediator for de-escalating the situation and peace in the region. On July 16, a meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and Azerbaijan, Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeihun Bairamov, was held in Tbilisi.

Additionally, with the mediation of Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili and the involvement of Philip Ricker, the US Acting Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, an agreement was reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as a result of which Azerbaijan released Armenian prisoners, and Armenia handed over important maps to Azerbaijan.

According to Darchiashvili, Georgia's priority is to ensure peace and security guarantees in the region. "It is for this purpose that our country has always tried to play the role of a mediator with our southern friends."

How important is Aliyev's initiative for Georgia, why did he announce it now, and how can things develop if it is implemented - those are the questions asked in the Georgian analytical community. Mamuka Areshidze, an expert on Caucasus issues, thinks there is still a very small chance of implementing the idea, which Georgia must use. "This is a very serious chance that the Georgian side should use. He has repeatedly announced the creation of such a platform to the representatives of the Georgian political elite. However, there were such ideas even before this government. People who discussed or worked on the Caucasian unity, we always wanted a similar platform to be created in Tbilisi and our capital to be the peace center of the entire Caucasus," argued the expert.
