Georgian Opposition Departs for Ukraine Amid Russia's War Anniversary
Lelo party
On February 22, the Lelo leaders met with Servant of the People ("Sluha Narodu" in Ukrainian"), the party's chairman, and other political council members in Kyiv. The meeting took place inside the ruling party's headquarters, the Lelo party reported. Salome Samadashvili, Grigol Gegelia, Secretary General Badri Japaridze, and Lelo Chairman Mamuka Khazaradze all directly attested to the support of the Georgian people during the gathering.
"The visit of Lelo's leaders to Ukraine is particularly important because Georgian Dream and representatives of the Georgian Government refused to visit Ukraine," the information said. "At the meeting at the headquarters of the ruling party of Ukraine, the parties discussed the relations between Ukraine and Georgia and the development of cooperation. The conversation touched on the common challenges of the two friendly countries on the way to European integration. The parties discussed the post-war reconstruction program and assistance in this direction in detail. The leaders of Lelo expressed their readiness to participate in this process actively," the press release reads.
Notably, the Ukrainian side had invited the Lelo group to visit Kyiv. Salome Samadashvili, Grigol Gegelia, Badri Japaridze, and Mamuka Khazaradze will all be present at Rada's extraordinary session on February 24 to mark the first anniversary of the commencement of the Russia-Ukraine war.
United National Movement
Ana Tsitlidze, a United National Movement member, stated that on February 24, members of the National Movement would depart for Ukraine. "They will participate in all of the activities scheduled by the Ukrainian Rada," she said. According to her, she is also planning to travel to Ukraine from the National Movement together with Davit Khajishvili and Gia Baramidze.
"On February 24, to celebrate the anniversary of the war, the Rada of Ukraine invited the Parliament of Georgia along with the parliamentary delegations of other countries. The Russian Dream refused this invitation. While the whole civilized world is with Ukraine today, and while the struggle for the freedom of Ukraine is also the struggle for the freedom of Georgia, the Russian Dream has once again said that it is not supporting the victory of Ukraine but is on the side of the enemy, Russia. With this refusal, the Russian Dream once again proved it follows a plan aimed at Georgia's separation from European values and the European family. With this refusal, Russian Dream once again said that it pursues Russian interests in this country," the official added.
"In contrast, the members of the United National Movement faction and party will go to Ukraine on February 24, will take part in all the events planned in the Ukrainian Rada, and will once again clearly tell our Ukrainian friends that the will of the Georgian Government does not reflect the will of the Georgian people. Georgian people support Ukraine's struggle for freedom and will stand by their side until the end. We will also talk with our Ukrainian friends about Mikheil Saakashvili's serious health condition and ways to save his health and life. With this visit, we will once again tell our Ukrainian friends that no matter how bad this Government is, it does not express the will of the Georgian people, and the Georgian people and the Georgian opposition are on the side of the Ukrainians," Tsitlidze said.
