Georgian President Joins the Crimean Platform

Through a video, Salome Zurabishvili, the president of Georgia, spoke to the participants at the Crimean Platform Summit on August 23. "Crimea is Ukraine!", said the President, and added, "I am proud to join the declaration of the Crimean Platform on behalf of Georgia and thus once again confirm our support for your territorial integrity, sovereignty, and your de-occupation strategy." "Today, it is a great honour for me to represent Georgia and its people at the summit. It is necessary to stand together to protect the values that unite us and which, I am sure, will shape our common future", Salome Zurabishvili emphasized.

She also noted that on August 24, "Ukraine will celebrate Independence Day and six months of its courageous resistance to Russian aggression." "We all know that Russian aggression in Ukraine did not start in February, and Crimea was indeed the initial challenge. This very well reminds us that unanswered challenges to peace and security, unanswered aggression towards the country's territorial integrity, only lead to more aggression and more instability," the president said. Salome Zurabishvili emphasised that for Georgia "it is well known and many wounds have been reopened, because the Kremlin's aggression against its peaceful neighbours follows the example that Georgia experienced in 1921, 1992, and 2008. Therefore, we know very well what invasion and occupation of our territory means. We understand very well what price your soldiers and your population as a whole paid and are paying," argued Zurabishvili."

Additionally, Zurabishvili congratulated Ukraine on achieving EU membership candidate status and expressed her belief that Georgia will soon join two partners—Ukraine and Moldova—on this common path. "I am firmly convinced that this anachronistic war will end soon and Ukraine, standing on the right side of history, will emerge victorious. There is no place for occupation in the 21st century!", said Zurabishvili. She added that "we will witness our nations regain unity, territorial integrity, and prosperity in a peaceful and secure Europe."

The Crimean Platform is a Ukrainian diplomatic initiative that was established last year and aims to strengthen internationally coordinated efforts against Russia's annexation of Crimea. Last year, the participants of the summit adopted a joint declaration, which established an international platform for Crimea, the goal of which is the peaceful de-occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol; the possible use of political, diplomatic, and restrictive measures against Russia; and the protection of human rights on the peninsula. In the joint declaration, the participants condemned the violations of human rights and international law in Crimea, as well as the ongoing militarization of the occupied territory and the change in the demographic structure.
