German President Urges Azerbaijan and Armenia to Continue Peace Talks with EU Mediation

On January 13, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier had a separate telephone conversation with the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia, Ilham Aliyev and Vahagn Khachaturyan, and discussed the situation in Europe, Ukraine, and the region.

"During the telephone conversation, the President of Germany emphasized that his country is interested in good relations with the South Caucasus states and the importance of stability in the region. He encouraged both sides to continue the tripartite peace talks with the European Union, led by the President of the European Council, Charles Michel," the Press Service of the German President said.

The Press Service of the President of Azerbaijan stated that during the telephone conversation, the presidents expressed their satisfaction with the current state of Azerbaijan-Germany relations and discussed the prospects of cooperation. Touching on regional security issues, Frank-Walter Steinmeier stressed that Germany supports the EU-Azerbaijan-Armenia tripartite format conducted with the direct participation of the President of the Council of the European Union, Charles Michel. "President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that he appreciated the tripartite negotiations held with the support of the President of the Council of the European Union, Charles Michel, and expressed Azerbaijan's commitment to the process of discussions within the framework of the tripartite format of the European Union-Azerbaijan-Armenia," the information stated.

The situation on the Khankendi/Stepanakert-Lachin road in the territory of Azerbaijan was discussed during the telephone conversation. President Aliyev said that Armenia's claims that the road is allegedly blocked are false, and free movement of humanitarian cargo is ensured on the road along the lines of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The press service of the Armenian president reported that during the telephone conversation, the humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh was discussed in detail, and ideas were exchanged regarding the solution to the problem. "Expressing full support for the peace process, Steinmeier noted that Germany is ready to make all efforts to resolve the situation and establish peace," the report said. The Press Service stressed that President Khachaturyan presented the steps taken by Armenia to establish peace in the region, confirmed that the Armenian side is ready to fulfill all the obligations arising from the tripartite statements, and said that he expects the same from the Azerbaijani side.
