On June 24, Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan, received a delegation headed by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran's Islamic Consultative Assembly, to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments. During the meeting, Aliyev expressed condolences to the people of Iran over the losses suffered during the recent war, noting that the Azerbaijani people and government had stood by Iran throughout the conflict. He emphasized that his telephone conversations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, along with contacts at various levels and other expressions of solidarity, reflected Azerbaijan's support for its neighbor. Aliyev welcomed the end of the hostilities and recalled that Azerbaijan had promptly issued an official statement supporting the ceasefire. "I hope there will be no wars in the region," he stated, stressing that both Azerbaijan and Iran have experienced the consequences of armed conflicts in the past.
Recalling Ghalibaf's previous visit to Azerbaijan, the president highlighted the significance of his participation in the 20th Session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States. Aliyev expressed confidence that the gathering would contribute to strengthening Islamic solidarity and noted that Azerbaijan is preparing to host the OIC Summit next year. The president also described Ghalibaf's visit as a valuable opportunity to review issues on the bilateral agenda, emphasizing the positive trajectory of Azerbaijan-Iran relations.
Conveying the greetings of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Ghalibaf expressed satisfaction with the meeting. Aliyev thanked him and asked that his own greetings be passed on to the Iranian president. Ghalibaf thanked Aliyev, the Azerbaijani government, and the Azerbaijani people for their support during what he described as Iran's difficult period. He also expressed gratitude for Aliyev's visit to the Iranian Embassy in Baku to offer condolences following the deaths of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei and numerous civilians, as well as for sending a congratulatory letter to Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei after his election as Iran's new Supreme Leader. Describing war as a major tragedy, Ghalibaf emphasized that Azerbaijan had maintained its good-neighborly approach throughout the conflict and had provided humanitarian assistance. He stated that the solidarity shown by Azerbaijan would remain in the memory of the Iranian people. According to Ghalibaf, Azerbaijan and Iran have consistently supported one another during challenging periods, reflecting the close ties between the two countries. He added that the conflict had demonstrated the importance of relations with Muslim states and said Iran had clearly identified its friends and adversaries during the war, noting that Azerbaijan had stood by Iran as a friendly nation.
The two sides expressed confidence that bilateral relations would continue to deepen. They welcomed the completion of the Aghband-Kelaleh bridge project and emphasized that the Araz Corridor passing through Iranian territory would help expand regional transportation opportunities. The meeting also included discussions on the future development of bilateral ties, interparliamentary cooperation, and the work of the Azerbaijan-Iran intergovernmental commission.
