Israeli Ambassador to Armenia Acknowledges Challenges but Optimistic About Future Armenian-Israeli Cooperation

On May 28, Joel Lion, the Israeli Ambassador to Armenia, and Ashot Shahmuradyan, the Honorary Consul of Israel, jointly organized a diplomatic dinner in Yerevan to mark the 77th anniversary of Israel’s independence and to promote closer Armenian-Israeli relations.
During the event, Lion highlighted the historical and contemporary ties between the two nations. He noted the resilience of the Jewish people, stating, “Seventy-seven years ago, despite all the trials and tribulations, the Jewish people rose from the ashes of exile and extermination to restore their sovereignty in their homeland.” He emphasized the importance of global friendships, including with Armenia, as sources of strength in difficult times.
Acknowledging that Armenian-Israeli relations are still evolving and face challenges, Lion expressed optimism about future cooperation. He stated, “Although our bilateral relations are still developing and not without complications, I am convinced that there is a real opportunity for cooperation.” He underscored the significance of dialogue, saying, “We don’t always agree, but we can always talk to each other, and conversation is important.”
Lion also drew parallels between the histories of both peoples, emphasizing their shared experiences as ancient nations that have endured persecution. “Our two peoples, as ancient nations that have historically been persecuted, know what it means to survive despite all trials and tribulations, and what it means to fight for identity, dignity, and freedom. This is the basis of mutual respect,” he stated.
Regarding reports about Azerbaijan’s purchase of weapons from Israel, Lion declined to comment, stating, “We do not comment on Israel’s national security policy.” He also addressed the ongoing judicial review concerning the property of the Jerusalem Patriarchate of the Armenian Apostolic Church, noting that Israel cannot interfere and that the judicial outcome will determine the matter’s resolution.
