New Draft Law on Political Parties in Azerbaijan; US Embassy Calls to Discuss with Venice Commission
Recently, the website of the Azerbaijani Parliament introduced the project of a new law on political parties.
Several items in the project are met with criticism of the opposition forces, such as the People Front of Azerbaijan and Musavat. They believe that if a party is boycotted twice in the election there, in the event of the announcement of registration, an increase in the number of members for registration and the requirement of the party to live in Azerbaijan in the last ten years to live in Azerbaijan.
The US Embassy in Azerbaijan was asked about the bill mentioned above. The Spokesperson answered: "We are concerned that the Azerbaijani government will further limit the freedom of unification of the Azerbaijani government, including the Azerbaijani government, including the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR). We call on the Council to reconsider their opinions and discuss the bill with the Venice Commission."
He emphasized that respect for freedom of association is a fundamental freedom in the Constitution and international obligations: "We will continue to watch this issue," the Embassy concluded.
