President Aliyev on Official Visit to Turkey

On February 18, Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, embarked on an official visit to Turkey at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. During his visit, President Aliyev paid respects at Anitkabir, the mausoleum of the founder of the Republic of Turkey, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, in Ankara.

On February 19, an official welcome ceremony was held for President Ilham Aliyev at the Presidential Palace of Turkey. Accompanied by cavalry, Aliyev arrived at the residence of President Erdoğan, where they engaged in a one-on-one meeting followed by an expanded meeting.

During the discussions, both leaders underscored the significance of the Shusha Declaration, which elevated the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Turkey to the level of alliance. They highlighted the remarkable growth in bilateral trade, which has reached 7.5 billion dollars, and emphasized cooperation in the defense industry, military, energy, education, and various other sectors. Additionally, they discussed key infrastructure projects such as the Middle Corridor and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, as well as joint initiatives in Nakhchivan.

President Aliyev expressed gratitude for Turkey's unwavering support during the 44-day war, noting its crucial role in the liberation of Azerbaijani territories. The leaders also discussed cooperation in international organizations and reaffirmed their mutual support.

President Erdoğan congratulated Azerbaijan on hosting COP29 and emphasized the significant prospects for bilateral cooperation. President Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan's readiness for further collaboration and stressed the importance of joint initiatives between the two countries.

Moreover, President Aliyev emphasized Azerbaijan's commitment to the Organization of Turkic States, considering it as Azerbaijan's family. Given its vast geography, abundant resources, and immense potential, he highlighted the importance of enhancing cooperation within the organization.

The meeting also addressed deepening cooperation in the defense industry and joint training of the armed forces of both countries, reflecting the strong strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and Turkey.

On February 19, a ceremony was held in Ankara for the signing of several important documents between Azerbaijan and Turkey.

Firstly, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Science and Education, Emin Amrullayev, and President of the Turkish Council of Higher Education, Erol Özvar, signed a "Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Council of Higher Education of the Republic of Turkey on the Establishment of the Turkey-Azerbaijan University." 

Secondly, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jeyhun Bayramov, and Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumakli, signed an "Agreement on Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Government of the Republic of Turkey in the field of Veterinary Medicine." 

Lastly, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy, Mikayil Jabbarov, and Turkish Minister of Treasury and Finance, Mehmet Şimşek, signed an "Agreement between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Turkey on the Elimination of Double Taxation concerning Taxes on Income and the Prevention of Tax Evasion."
