Russia Abolishes Oil and Gas Duties to Tskhinvali, Breakaway Region Awaits Aid in Fuel Crisis
As of January 10, Russia has eliminated customs duties on the shipment of gas and oil products to the occupied Tskhinvali area. The volumes that the Kremlin and the de facto authorities in Tskhinvali have decided upon will be subject to zero duty. At the same time, the excess quantity will still be subject to the Russian standard rate. The parties also imposed zero tariffs on several product categories in 2024, including plastics, aluminum, and its derivatives, and ferrous metals and their derivatives.
Moreover, Teimuraz Mikvabia, the de-facto Deputy Economy Minister of the separatist Abkhazia, said, "The [de-facto] Abkhazian authorities appealed to Russian government bodies to solve the problem with supplies of oil products to the republic."
"We appealed to several Russian authorities to help us with uninterrupted supply of oil products. They did not manage to do anything before the end of the year, and we are waiting for some kind of response in the first working days," Mikvabia added. According to the de-facto deputy minister, the issue is about importing fuel already paid for by local companies into the republic and, in general, about solving the problem with the supply of oil products to the republic.
According to his assessment, currently, only Rosneft can import oil products to Abkhazia. "So far in Abkhazia, there is no shortage of fuel, the volume that is now in the country is still enough, but there is a problem with the fact that not all local companies and gas stations can work," he added.
