Russian Foreign Ministry Reacts Harshly to Grigoryan's Remarks on the Protection of Armenia's Borders

| News, Politics, Armenia

On 5 June, Armenian Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan said that if communications with Azerbaijan are opened, all border services will be provided only by Armenian border guards.

"Regarding the issue of unblocking communications, there is a very important detail here, and I think this detail is clear to all participating partners. Armenia will exercise full border control and control over border services. That is to say, in the context of Armenia, unblocking means that only Armenia will provide border services," he added.

Armen Grigoryan also said that Armenia's membership in the CSTO was causing problems for his country. He also said that Russia's export capabilities in arms sales have declined, so Armenia is looking for alternative suppliers.

Answering questions at a briefing on 7 June, Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, commented on the statement made by the Secretary of the Security Council of Armenia, Armen Grigoryan. Zakharova described the statements made by the Secretary of the Armenian Security Council as anti-Russian: "First of all, it would be good if the high-ranking official of Armenia, whom you mentioned, would make a choice: either a normal dialogue, such a dialogue is not only possible, but even necessary, because we have such experience with the Armenian side, or such statements. We choose the first".

"As for the issue of restoring communications in the region, this issue is being worked out objectively by the deputy prime ministers of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia. That's why I don't think it's right to react to such comments from the outside," she said.

It is noteworthy that according to the provisions of the trilateral statement signed between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia on 9 November 2020, the control over the transport communication between Azerbaijan and its exclave Nakhchivan should be exercised by the border troops of the Federal Security Service of Russia. This route runs through the territory of Armenia and is known in Baku as the "Zangezur Corridor". This is probably the reason why in Baku Armen Grigoryan's statement was seen as contradicting the trilateral statement.
