Serbian Ambassador Touts Strategic Partnership with Azerbaijan, Eyes Expanded Gas Supplies

| News, Economy, Azerbaijan

In an interview on July 30, Serbian Ambassador Dragan Vladisavljević described relations with Azerbaijan as highly satisfactory, with strong political ties based on mutual respect and adherence to international law. He highlighted Azerbaijan’s support for Serbia’s sovereignty and noted firm relations between the two presidents. Trade turnover reached $512.6 million in 2024, driven by Serbian imports of Azerbaijani oil, gas, and fertilizers, a figure he expects to grow. He stressed the need for business forums and a direct flight between Belgrade and Baku to boost cooperation.

In the energy sector, the countries have agreed to construct a large gas-fired power plant in Niš, crucial for Serbia's energy security. Serbia currently imports about 400 million cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas annually, with plans to increase this to 1 billion cubic meters by 2027. This increase will be facilitated by a new 70 km pipeline connecting Serbia and North Macedonia, expected to be completed in 2027. While Serbian companies are interested in reconstruction projects in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories, a lack of clear information has so far prevented their involvement. Conversely, the Azerbaijani company AzVirt has been involved in Serbian road projects worth up to $1 billion. Looking ahead, diplomatic consultations and a joint commission session are planned for the coming months.
