The US Appoints a Temporary Ambassador to Azerbaijan

The US appointed Hugo Guevara as a new charge d'affaires of the US in Azerbaijan. Recently, Hugo Guevara took up the position of the Deputy Head of Mission at the US Embassy in Baku on June 29.

According to the information of the US Embassy, ​​the new charge d'affaires Hugo Guevara has extensive experience in the State Department. One of his recent positions is cooperation with the Guatemalan government in the field of security and rule of law at the US Embassy in Guatemala City. Before starting his current job, Hugo studied the Azerbaijani language in Washington.

"I came to Baku as a Deputy Ambassador. Ambassador Litzenberger has recently finished his diplomatic career. I will be the temporary charge d'affaires until the arrival of the new ambassador. I learned the Azerbaijani language in Washington. Now I am happy to see this beautiful country and meet its friendly people. I look forward to working with you to strengthen the relationship between our countries," he said in a video address.

On May 25, US President Joe Biden nominated Mark W. Libby, who currently works as an adviser to the State Department at the National Military College in Washington, to the position of United States Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan. The Senate must confirm his nomination.

In April, Caucasus Watch reported that the United Kingdom appointed a new ambassador to Azerbaijan - Fergus Auld, the UK government announced. He will succeed James Lyall Sharp. Auld will take up his appointment in August 2022. Fergus Auld was Head of South Asia Department and India Coordinator (2017-2021), Head of Talent, Diversity and Learning and Development Unit (2015-2017), Head of International Extremism Unit (2014-2015), and Political Counsellor in Moscow (2011-2014).
