Trade Turnover Between Separatist Abkhazia and Turkey Increases by 142%
At the board of the de-facto State Customs Committee following the results of last year on March 3, Alias Labakhua, the First Deputy Chairman of the State Customs Committee of separatist Abkhazia, the foreign trade turnover of [separatist] Abkhazia for 2022 amounted to EUR 496 million, which is 11.2% more than the previous year. The separatist official said that the plan for 2022 has been completed at 117% of its target.
According to him, the top ten trading partners of Abkhazia for 2022 include such countries as Russia (76%), Turkey (11%), the United States, Moldova, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Belarus, China, Brazil, and Germany. In 2022, the volume of export deliveries from the republic amounted to EUR 86 million; compared to the previous year, this figure increased by EUR 11 million, or 14.9%. Abkhazian goods in 2022 were exported to the Russian Federation, Turkey, and Belarus, as humanitarian aid to the separatist Luhansk People's Republic and the separatist Donetsk People's Republic. The import turnover of the republic in 2022 amounted to EUR 410 million; compared to the same period in 2021, the trade turnover increased by EUR 38 million, an increase of 10.4%.
Foreign trade in Abkhazia is carried out by three types of transport: by road - 74%, by sea - 12%, and by rail - 14%. Cargoes in the amount of EUR 369 million were moved by road. By rail, the cargo was moved in the amount of EUR 70 million, which is EUR 1.3 million less than the previous year. In 2022, the cargo was carried by sea in the amount of EUR 57 million.
"The main focus of Abkhazia's foreign economic activity is on goods from the Russian Federation. In 2022, the trade turnover between Abkhazia and Russia increased by 13%. It amounted to a record EUR 379 million, more than EUR 43 million compared to the previous year. There is an increase in exports of Abkhazian goods to the Russian Federation by 5.9% which amounts to EUR 62 million. This indicates that Russia is the main strategic partner for the republic. The share of trade between Abkhazia and the Russian Federation for 2022 amounted to 76%. In 2022, the volume of accruals of customs payments amounted to EUR 36 million, the benchmark for the accrual of customs payments for 2022 was achieved by 117%," the separatist official added.
According to the de-facto State Customs Committee, the trade turnover between Abkhazia and Turkey in 2022 increased by 142% compared to 2021, or by EUR 33 million, and amounted to EUR 56 million. Exports amounted to EUR 19 million, EUR 14 million more than in 2021. Imports amounted to EUR 36 million, which is EUR 19 million more than in 2021.
