UK, UAE, Russia, Albania Don't Accept France's Statement on Lachin Corridor in UN Security Council

France and Armenia called a UN Security Council meeting on December 20–21 to discuss the developing situation along the Lachin Corridor. This came after the events of September 2022, when the UN Security Council's agenda item headed "Letter of the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the UN" was added at the request of Yerevan and on France's direct diplomatic initiative. In September 2022, the French-Armenian diplomatic team made every effort to get a paper on the outcomes of the events at that time accepted by the UN Security Council.

As the chair of the UN Security Council and a permanent member (permanent members and non-permanent members alternate as chairmen once a month), France prepared a pro-Armenian text of a statement that described the situation on the Lachin-Stepanakert/Khankendi road as a humanitarian catastrophe right after the discussions on December 20–21.

There were heated discussions and disagreements surrounding this document for more than ten days. Ultimately, France announced that it was suspending the process of promoting this document.

Vagif Sadikhov, Azerbaijan’s ambassador to Belgium and Luxembourg, Head of the Mission to the European Union in Belgium, thanked the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, and Albania for backing Azerbaijan in the UN Security Council.

Dmitry Polyanskiy, the First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations, stated that Paris had largely ignored Russia's proposals during the debates on the matter, which had led to Russia's negative attitude towards the French project of the statement on the Lachin Corridor.
