United National Movement to Start Major Protest After Court Decision on Saakashvili
On February 6, Giorgi Arevadze, the judge of the Tbilisi City Court, decided that former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili should not be released from detention. Additionally, he did not postpone the third president's punishment.
Georgian Dream parliamentary group leader Mamuka Mdinaradze stated, "This is a court ruling, I cannot say more; whether it is right or not is up to the court to judge. Saakashvili should be invited to dine, he said, rather than spending so much money on lobbyists." He added, "If someone wants to take risks to fool the state and shield themselves from prosecution, this method will not work. If someone is truly concerned about the status of Saakashvili's health, they should ask him to consume some calorie-rich meal."
Mikheil Saakashvili said on his Facebook page: "I am unbreakable! It is time to lash out and fight right now! Time to combine all efforts! After the court's ruling. We will not have Georgia handed over to Russia."
After the City Court judge rejected Mikheil Saakashvili's request for a sentencing delay on February 6, Levan Khabeishvili, the newly elected United National Movement (UNM) Chairman, stated, "Starting tomorrow, United National Movement stops its legislative activity."
According to Khabeishvili, UNM will operate in emergency mode. He also spoke to the heads of UNM regional branches and UNM factions in municipal councils. He said, "We are waiting for everyone in the capital, which would be the primary point of protest." Additionally, Khabeishvili noted that the top Georgian Dream officials will not get any reprieve from this point forward, and Prime Minister Garibashvili will be the first to experience it.
