Vardan Ghukasyan’s Lawyer Complains About Poor Detention Conditions
On October 29, Zaruhi Postanjyan, the lawyer for Vardan Ghukasyan, the arrested Mayor of Gyumri, stated that her client’s detention conditions are "horrible and inhumane." Postanjyan asserted that Ghukasyan was being subjected to psychological pressure and noted that she had filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
Postanjyan confirmed that the mayor was suffering from diabetes and was being deprived of necessary specialized medical care. "The conditions are unbearable. He is in a damp, cold, and dirty cell, which is entirely unacceptable for a person with his health condition. This is a form of torture," she stated. The lawyer added that she had also requested the Prosecutor General’s Office to change the restrictive measure from arrest to release on recognizance.
Ghukasyan, who is a pro-Russian figure, was arrested on October 21 for two months by the Anti-Corruption Court on charges of bribery. Postanjyan previously claimed that the case against her client was "orchestrated" and aimed at “creating chaos in Gyumri.”
