Zourabichvili Urges Electoral Readiness, Calls for New Political Parties in Georgia
On January 11, during her "regional tour" in Zugdidi, Salome Zourabichvili, the President of Georgia, emphasized the necessity of preparing for potential new elections, describing it as essential for ensuring democratic outcomes.
Zourabichvili stressed that readiness for elections is the cornerstone of peaceful and democratic development. "Elections need preparedness," she stated, highlighting the need to address the uncertainty of previous elections. She encouraged dissatisfied citizens to form new political parties, declaring, "There should be no more talk before the next elections: ‘I don’t like this party, I don’t like that party.’ If you don’t like it, form your own! Your turn has come!" She also noted the importance of diversity in politics, saying, "Those parties will also have their place; diversity is the strength of this country, but new parties are really needed, reflecting the new Georgia that is being born today."
The President underscored her commitment to ensuring free and fair elections, promising, "I will be fully involved with all the efforts I can make for this country." She accused the ruling Georgian Dream party of serving Russian interests by fostering division in Georgia, stating, "Russia, through the Georgian Dream regime, is trying to create confrontation and divide Georgia into two sides. But there are no ‘two sides’ in Georgia today. There is one regime and one society."
Zourabichvili announced her upcoming visit to Washington, DC, to attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump. She highlighted Georgia's strong support from its allies in Europe and the US, stating, "This country has rarely had so many friends, whether in Europe or America." She credited the ongoing protests across Georgia for drawing international attention, noting, "The West stands with the Georgian people because of their aspirations and clear dedication to democracy." She expressed gratitude to protesters nationwide, emphasizing their role in garnering international support and solidarity.
