Armenia Plans Three Operational Satellites by 2031

Armenia plans to have at least three operational satellites by 2031 as part of a government program to expand the country’s national space capabilities, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at the International Space Summit in Paris.

Under the 2026–2031 government program, Armenia intends to operate two Earth-observation satellites and one telecommunications satellite. The plan also includes developing domestic ground infrastructure and technical expertise for satellite command and control, data reception, processing, and analysis.

Pashinyan noted that Armenia had entered a new stage in developing its national space capabilities. The country launched ARMASAT-1 in 2022, developed using European technology and placed into orbit by SpaceX. In 2023, Armenia launched HAYASAT-1, which Pashinyan described as the first satellite fully assembled and tested by Armenian specialists.

Both satellites are no longer operational, according to Armenian media reports, making the government’s new program a push to establish a longer-term and more self-sufficient space capability.

The planned satellite network would give Armenia greater capacity in Earth observation and telecommunications while also requiring the development of domestic infrastructure and personnel able to operate and process satellite data.
