Armenian Security Service Takes Over Border Protection in Tavush Province
As of May 23, the border guard troops of the National Security Service (NSS) of Armenia officially took over the protection of a 1.9 km sector of Berkaber village, as well as 4.9 km sectors of Voskepar and Baghanis villages in Tavush Province along the Armenian national border, the NSS noted in a statement. Additionally, until July 24, the protection of the 5.8 km sector of Kirants village in Tavush Province will be managed through a transitional scheme.
Following a similar protocol, as of May 23, the protection of the corresponding border sectors on the Azerbaijani side will be handled by the State Border Service of Azerbaijan units.
Regarding these recent border developments, during press briefings in the National Assembly (NA), Seyran Ohanyan, leader of the opposition Armenia Faction and former defense minister of Armenia, emphasized that Azerbaijan acts solely in its interests.
The opposition MP noted that in one case, Azerbaijan imposes border delimitation in the direction of Armenia’s Tavush Province, it can refer to one or another map and the Almaty Declaration of 1991, and in the other case, it does not agree with what may go beyond its interests.
“Peace with Azerbaijan is a necessity, but the current process is premature, especially if we take into account its [i.e., Azerbaijan's] rhetoric, provocations, and genocide against Artsakh [(Nagorno-Karabakh)],” Seyran Ohanyan noted.
