Azerbaijan Accuses France of Arming Armenia and Promoting Revanchism
On September 25, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a statement demanding France cease its “destructive activities in the region.” This statement was made in response to anti-Azerbaijani remarks by French President Emmanuel Macron during his speech at the UN General Assembly.
In his commentary, the Ministry highlighted Macron's statement on September 25, where the French President declared, "France stands shoulder to shoulder with Armenia in the conditions of Azerbaijan's pressures on Armenia and territorial claims." The ministry described this as yet another example of France's biased pro-Armenian stance, not only towards Azerbaijan but also in the broader peace process.
The ministry further emphasized that it is unacceptable for France, which is extensively arming Armenia and preparing it for revanchism, to accuse Azerbaijan of coercion. "France, presenting Armenia as a peace-loving country while Armenia occupied Azerbaijan's territories for nearly 30 years, displaced nearly one million Azerbaijanis, committed massacres and crimes against humanity, and ignored the right of return of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis who were deported en masse from its territory clearly demonstrates how unjust French policy is," the statement read.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry called for an immediate halt to France's damaging actions in the region, noting that French foreign policy has failed in many parts of the world.
Macron Affirms Support for Armenia at UN General Assembly
In a speech at the UN General Assembly, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed France’s strong support for Armenia amid pressure from Azerbaijan. He referenced Armenia as part of a broader discussion on “the all too long list of forgotten wars, unjust victories, poorly negotiated resolutions” in global conflicts.
“The international community must be there to ensure that peace negotiations are successful and that internationally recognized borders are preserved,” he outlined.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry condemned French President Macron’s remarks and stated that France should cease its “unconstructive actions in our region.” He further accused Paris of “heavily arming and preparing Armenia for revanchism.”
