Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met with European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus Magdalena Grono in Baku on September 10, with the sides reviewing Azerbaijan-EU relations, regional developments and efforts to strengthen peace in the South Caucasus.

The meeting focused on the current Azerbaijan-EU agenda and prospects for expanding cooperation. Bayramov and Grono underlined the importance of continued high-level contacts and reciprocal visits for maintaining political engagement and developing cooperation in different fields.

The two sides also addressed the institutional and legal framework of bilateral relations. Particular attention was given to completing negotiations on the Azerbaijan-EU Partnership Priorities document, as well as the prospects for beginning negotiations on a new bilateral agreement.

Bayramov provided Grono with information on Azerbaijan’s approach to regional security and the normalization process with Armenia. He highlighted recent steps aimed at building confidence between Baku and Yerevan and referred to the August meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Bishkek as an important development for the regional peace process.

The minister also outlined Azerbaijan’s efforts to strengthen peace and security in the South Caucasus and referred to the broader work underway to establish stable relations between the two neighboring countries.

Energy and communications were among the regional issues covered during the meeting. The sides exchanged views on ongoing projects and developments in these sectors, alongside other bilateral and regional matters of mutual interest.

The meeting offered an opportunity for Baku and Brussels to review both the institutional development of their relationship and regional issues, with Azerbaijan highlighting its priorities in economic cooperation, connectivity and the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process.
