On January 27, the statement issued by the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry addressed the terrorist attack against the Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Islamic Republic of Iran on January 27, 2023.

"In the aftermath of the attack, one embassy employee lost their life, while two others sustained serious injuries, prompting the evacuation of embassy staff and their families due to the substantial risk to their safety. Despite the obligations outlined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the Iranian side, as the accrediting country, failed to safeguard the embassy premises and ensure the protection of its personnel," the report added.

"Over the past year, Azerbaijan and Iran have engaged in ongoing discussions and contacts aimed at addressing the aftermath of the terrorist attack. Azerbaijan has communicated its expectations for the severe punishment of those involved in organizing and carrying out the attack and the assurance of full security for the embassy. The Iranian side has kept Azerbaijan informed about investigative measures, and the first trial session for the perpetrator of the terrorist act was scheduled for January 27, 2024," the ministry noted."

On the same day, a court hearing was held in Tehran with the participation of the defendant and his lawyers on the charge of attacking the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran. Representatives of the Azerbaijani embassy also participated in the court.

"At the beginning of the session, the judge announced the charges against the accused, and then the prosecutor announced the indictment. According to the indictment, the accused is accused of murdering an Azerbaijani citizen at the embassy, acquiring, transporting, and keeping illegal weapons and ammunition, and interfering with public order. He is also charged with vandalizing the Azerbaijani embassy, killing three of its employees, and intentionally causing harm to health. After the indictment was announced, the accused and his lawyers protested. At the end of the meeting, it was announced that the consideration of this case had been concluded, and the court's chairman emphasized that the verdict would be announced within the time limit set by the law," the information added.

On January 27, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov stated that the attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran last year constituted a significant blow to the entire nation. He emphasized the commemoration of martyr Orkhan Asgarov, who lost his life in the terrorist attack. "A year ago today, a terrorist attack was committed on our embassy in Tehran. Today, we commemorated our martyr, Orkhan Asgarov. Embassy employees who were with Orkhan during that terrorist attack also took part here. This terror was a big blow to our people, Azerbaijan. This act was most sharply condemned, international organizations also expressed their position," Bayramov conveyed to journalists.

Jeyhun Bayramov stated that two main points will be considered regarding the restoration of the activities of the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran. He informed journalists that the primary concern is the conclusion of the investigation related to the incident and the final decision-making process. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of ensuring the embassy's security during negotiations between Azerbaijan and Iran if the embassy's operations are reinstated. Bayramov emphasized, "Because we cannot risk the lives of our people." He also stressed the need for dialogue with Iran on complex issues, noting that Iran is a neighboring country and discussions should not solely focus on negative aspects.
