Azerbaijan’s President and Danish Ambassador Discuss Expanding Bilateral Trade and Energy Cooperation
On October 14, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received the credentials of Denmark’s newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Ole Toft. During their conversation, President Aliyev acknowledged that cooperation between Azerbaijan and Denmark has been limited, but he emphasized the potential for developing bilateral relations, particularly in trade. Aliyev highlighted Azerbaijan's active partnerships with several EU member states and stressed the importance of discussing regional policy at this critical historical moment.
Ambassador Toft expressed his commitment to enhancing cooperation between the two countries, especially in trade, and mentioned the growing recognition among Danish politicians of Azerbaijan's strategic importance as a country linking Europe with Central Asia. He acknowledged Azerbaijan's emerging role as a hub for trade, energy, and infrastructure, and he emphasized the potential for Danish companies to contribute to these efforts.
President Aliyev outlined Azerbaijan’s efforts to attract investment in oil, gas, and green energy, as well as the country’s ambition to become an international hub for green energy and transportation. He noted that, despite Azerbaijan’s lack of access to open seas, the country has successfully established one of the largest international shipping fleets and modern transportation infrastructure, including railways, highways, seaports, and airlines. This, Aliyev explained, positions Azerbaijan at the crossroads of the North-South and East-West corridors, creating a strong platform for international cooperation and making Azerbaijan the optimal route for transportation between the East and West.
The Azerbaijani President also highlighted the increase in cargo transportation within the country and the ongoing digitization of transportation infrastructure and customs, which are expected to improve the efficiency of transport operations.
Ambassador Toft acknowledged Azerbaijan’s successful development strategy and its ambition to become a regional transportation and logistics hub. The two parties also discussed Denmark’s extensive experience in transportation and explored prospects for cooperation, particularly involving Danish companies.
The ambassador congratulated President Aliyev on Azerbaijan's hosting of COP29 and emphasized its global significance. He noted the constructive cooperation between the climate delegations of Denmark and Azerbaijan within the COP29 framework and discussed potential joint initiatives between the two countries in green energy and green technologies.
During the meeting, President Aliyev specifically mentioned Azerbaijan's active role in establishing a "green energy corridor" linking the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. This corridor includes a planned cable line under the Black Sea connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary. Aliyev also highlighted renewable energy projects aimed at linking Central Asian countries, such as Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, with Azerbaijan through the Caspian Sea, underscoring the corridor's potential as an alternative energy source for the European Union.
