Tensions were high today in the heart of the Armenian capital, Yerevan, as protesters clashed with police while demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The demonstrations, led by Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, a prominent figure in the Armenian Apostolic Church, have been going on for several weeks, sparked by the government's decision to return four border villages to Azerbaijan.
Leaders of Galstanyan's Tavush for the Motherland movement have publicly endorsed the archbishop's possible candidacy for prime minister, further fueling the movement.
Today's protests escalated when some demonstrators attempted to storm the National Assembly, prompting riot police to use stun grenades to disperse the crowd. Reports indicate that 98 people were arrested in Yerevan. Dozens were injured, including 16 police officers.
According to the latest reports, the demonstrators led by Galstanyan plan to continue their protests in front of the Armenian government office. Galstanyan insists on a meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
Armenia's pro-government media accuse the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Garegin II, of orchestrating the mass protests in order to overthrow the government of Nikol Pashinyan.
