CSTO Official Warns of Escalation Risks in South Caucasus

| News, Security, Armenia

On June 24, Viktor Vasiliev, the current Chairman of the CSTO Permanent Council, stated at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum that military and political actions by Western countries in relation to Armenia could result in further escalation in the South Caucasus region.

Vasiliev noted that developments in the South Caucasus require particular attention, including in the context of elections in Armenia. He said, "US plans to supposedly ensure security for the Zangezur Corridor, EU countries' intentions to incorporate Armenia into their military structures, and other unfriendly steps in this region will ultimately lead to further escalation. We are monitoring the situation," he noted.

He further stated that the issue of Armenia’s continued membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization will be carefully examined by the CSTO leadership. Vasiliev emphasized that this matter "will also be the subject of the most careful attention and discussion by the senior leadership," referring to ongoing internal deliberations within the organization.
