EU's Charles Michel Urges Armenia and Azerbaijan to Finalize Peace Treaty
Charles Michel, the President of the Council of the European Union, resumed his efforts to bring lasting peace to the South Caucasus. Citing two high-ranking diplomats, Politico reported that Charles Michel held bilateral meetings with the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia during the European Political Union summit held in Great Britain last month.
Charles Michel also wrote to both sides, urging them to return to the negotiating table to resolve outstanding issues such as border delimitation and finalize a peace treaty.
Politico noted that months of delays and a diplomatic deadlock over signing a long-awaited peace deal added to Brussels's frustration. "At the end of the day, it's up to both parties to stop playing and sign the contract. President Michel used all the means at the disposal of the European Union to reach an agreement," an EU diplomat close to Charles Michel told Politico.
