First Batch of Kazakh Oil Transported Through Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan Pipeline

| News, Economy, Azerbaijan, Georgia

On April 22, "SOCAR Midstream Operations" LLC, a subsidiary of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), reported that the first batch of Kazakh oil transported through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline was shipped from the Turkish port of Ceyhan.

According to the information, 83.2 thousand tons (665 thousand barrels) of oil produced from the "Tengiz" field were loaded on the "Alatau" tanker. Delegations of SOCAR, KazMunayGaz, Tengizchevroil, Kazmortransflot, and their subsidiaries participated in the loading ceremony. "This achievement was achieved as a result of continuous oil supply from the Aktau port of Kazakhstan to the Azertrans Sangachal terminal, which began in March 2023, and subsequent transportation through BTC. Loading of the next batch of Kazakh oil to the tanker at Ceyhan port is planned for the end of May 2023," the information stated.

"SOCAR Midstream Operations" LLC stated that transportation of Kazakh oil through BTC is carried out within the framework of the agreement between SOCAR and "KazMunayGaz" company, which provides for the transit of 1.5 million tons of oil annually. On March 23, 2023, the first batch of Kazakh oil produced from the "Tengiz" field was brought from Aktau to the Sangachal terminal by the "President Heydar Aliyev" tanker. In 2022, SOCAR implemented projects to renew the network of collecting pipelines in and around the territory of the Sangachal terminal to receive Kazakh oil into the BTC pipeline. These projects have increased BTC's transmission capacity utilization.

"The departure of the first batch of Kazakh oil from the port of Ceyhan is an important achievement in the direction of strengthening the partnership between SOCAR and KazMunayGaz. This event once again proves the importance of regional energy cooperation, showing the strategic role of the BTC pipeline as the main route for transporting Caspian oil to world markets," the information added.
