Foreign Donors Backing Radical Ideologies in Georgia, Claims Tbilisi Mayor
On April 10, Kakha Kaladze, the Secretary General of the ruling Georgian Dream party and Tbilisi Mayor, highlighted the issue of foreign funding contributing to the propagation of radical ideologies and extremism within Georgia.
He stated that these external donors aim to obstruct the enactment of legislation regarding foreign agents. "There is radicalism prevalent within the country. Often concealed from public scrutiny, funding originates from donors supporting radical and extremist agendas. While they claim to offer assistance, such as training programs for families coping with serious illnesses, the true nature of these initiatives remains undisclosed to society," Kaladze remarked, shedding light on the covert nature of such support.
Kaladze underscored the detrimental impact of radicalism on the nation's future, affirming, "Radicalism holds no place in our country's trajectory. Any instances of radical behavior or law infringement will be met with appropriate measures from the authorities and the state."
Furthermore, the Secretary-General expressed concern over the opposition from Georgia's European and American partners to the proposed bill. He revealed that ratifying the legislation on foreign agents could have potential repercussions for Tbilisi, including the risk of hindering integration efforts with the EU and NATO.
Despite acknowledging the collective desire to align with Europe, Kaladze clarified: "We all aspire to embrace European values, including myself. However, Georgia must exercise independent judgment and not blindly adhere to European directives."
He cautioned against equating European integration with relinquishing national sovereignty, stating, "Advocating for a European future does not entail forsaking our nation and its sovereignty... Let me reiterate - substituting one master for another does not constitute democracy."
