Garibashvili Calls for Peaceful De-occupation: Highest National Interest of Georgia
At an event marking the founding day of the State Security Service on August 3, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili is confident that as a result of the pragmatic policy of the authorities, the country will succeed in peaceful de-occupation [hinting at the separatist South Ossetia/Tskhinvali Region and Abkhazia].
"Our main motto is to protect the national interests of our country and not to serve the interests of other countries," Garibashvili said. According to the Georgian Prime Minister, Georgia's regional and international role and importance is growing daily.
"I believe that as a result of our correct, pragmatic, result-oriented policies, our country will succeed in peaceful de-occupation and unification. Today, there is no higher national interest in the country," the Georgian leader said.
The separatist South Ossetia/Tskhinvali Region and Abkhazia are two breakaway regions of Georgia. Both regions declared independence from Georgia in the early 1990s, leading to conflicts and ongoing political tensions. Abkhazia and South Ossetia have established de facto independent governments with their own administrations, security forces, and institutions. However, their independence is not widely recognized, and they heavily rely on political and economic support from Russia. The conflicts have resulted in significant human suffering, displacement, and strained relations between Georgia and Russia.
