Georgia Joins Three Declarations at Paris Space Summit

| News, Politics, Georgia

Georgia has joined three declarations adopted at the International Space Summit in Paris, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze stated on September 10, highlighting Tbilisi’s participation in international decision-making on space policy.

Kobakhidze noted that Georgia had signed the Declaration on the Safety and Sustainability of Outer Space, the Copernicus Declaration and the Declaration on Space Science Data. Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili also confirmed Georgia’s participation in all three documents.

According to Kobakhidze, joining the declarations is important for Georgia despite its limited resources in the space sector. He maintained that the country participates in international platforms where decisions on space-related issues are taken and intends to remain involved throughout the relevant decision-making process.

“It is important for Europe to have its own vision, its own independent policy regarding space issues,” Kobakhidze said, adding that Georgia’s position is also significant to its European partners. He emphasized that Tbilisi would continue working with European colleagues on these issues.

Kobakhidze attended the summit at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron. The Georgian prime minister used the summit to stress the value of Georgia’s participation in international discussions despite the country’s relatively small role in the space sector. For Tbilisi, joining the declarations provides an opportunity to participate in a wider European and international framework covering space security, scientific cooperation and the use of satellite and Earth observation technologies.
