Georgia’s State Security Service (SSSG) and the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) conducted the interagency field exercise “NEXUS Georgia 2026” in Batumi, focusing on responses to chemical and biological threats.

The exercise brought together personnel from Georgian agencies responsible for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) security, including the SSSG and relevant units of the ministries of internal affairs, defense, economy, finance, and health.

According to the SSSG, participants worked through three scenarios involving chemical and biological incidents under conditions designed to replicate real-world emergencies. The drills were used to test existing procedures, assess coordination between state agencies, and identify shortcomings in the response system.

The Georgian security service reported that recommendations would be prepared based on the findings and that additional projects and training exercises would be launched with support from partner countries.

A further simulation is scheduled for September 8 in Mtskheta, where participants will receive practical training on responding to incidents involving chemical substances and explosives at mass-gathering sites.

The SSSG assessed cooperation with DTRA as longstanding and said U.S. support has contributed to strengthening Georgia’s security-sector resilience, particularly its capacity to prevent and respond to CBRN threats.
