Georgian Dream responds to call to create a commission on Saakashvili
A Georgian parliamentary deputies’ inquiry commission into allegations of "torture" of former president Mikheil Saakashvili in prison will establish that this was not the case, the chairman of the ruling party "Georgian Dream" Irakli Kobakhidze said to journalists on January 4.
“When it comes to the improper treatment of Saakashvili, we know there is no reason for this. If such a commission is created, it will only be established that there was no place for improper treatment,” Kobakhidze said.
He also commented on statements from representatives of the United National Movement about their readiness to end the boycott of parliament if a commission on Saakashvili is created. Kobakhidze noted that “Dream” members are not interested in the statements of the “nationals.”
It is worth noting that he and his supporters call Saakashvili's "torture" the transfer of the ex-president in November 2021 to the Gldani prison in Tbilisi. The guards carried the politician to the cell, holding his hands and feet.
Earlier, Ombudsman of Georgia Nino Lomjaria discussed the state of human rights in Georgia in 2021 amid International Human Rights Day.
Lomjaria said that Georgia's detained third president, Mikheil Saakashvili, had been denied a fair trial.
"The case of Mikheil Saakashvili was considered by the Public Defender as a breach of the right to a fair trial since he was not permitted to present in court during the first three trials due to being baseless and unlawful reasons," Lomjaria stated.
The footage of Saakashvili's transportation to Gldani facility N18, according to Lomjaria, violates the former president's rights. According to her, the ombudsman's viewpoint corresponds to the State Inspector's Office's evaluation.
Moreover, on December 28 by the Minister of Justice of the Republic, Rati Bregadze announced that after the end of the hunger strike, Saakashvili’s treatment ended, so he would return to prison in Rustavi.
“Mikheil Saakashvili was treated in the Gori military hospital and was discharged from the hospital. Naturally, a prisoner cannot be in a medical institution when the treatment is over,” said the head of the Ministry of Justice.
Let us remind you that Saakashvili was taken into custody on October 1 after he returned to Georgia. From the first day, he went on a hunger strike without giving any reason. First, he was transferred to the Gldani prison in Tbilisi, where there is a hospital, which caused a sharp reaction from the politician. He repeatedly stated that he did not consent to medical assistance and expressed dissatisfaction with the conditions of detention. As a result, Saakashvili was transferred to the Gori hospital on November 20.
